The Field Hockey Wars

Ring ! Ring ! Went the bell.  Everybody was racing to the board but, Caitlin, Kathy, and Amanda; they walked. They all knew what they wanted to sign up for. The three of them were going to sign up for the field hockey team. When they  were  at the water fountain, they heard someone say something about field hockey. They listened in closer but they couldn’t make it out until  Kily came over and told them. “Hey guys, did you hear the coach of the field hockey team is looking for a new assistant coach!” “Really!”  Caitlin, Kathy, and Amanda all chirped. “Yes!” replied Kily. “Bye  guys!” yelled Kily as she ran down the hall. “I hope I get the job as the assistant coach!” said Caitlin. “Me too.  I hope I get the job too!”replied Amanda.  “Wow, I guess I want the job too!” added Kathy.

Caitlin didn’t do anything but stand there and think we all want to be the assistant coach but there’s only one. Then she said, “Hey guys, we are three people and well there can only be one assistant coach of the team.”  “ Caitlin you’re right, there can only be one.”replied Kathy. “Wait, so if we can’t all be the assistant coach then.” Amanda stopped. After she said that she didn’t say a word. They all were silent. Caitlin thought,  I  want the spot for the coach but I do not want my friends to be  unhappy. This was trouble for Caitlin because she is always depending on her friends and now she’s alone on her own trying to find a way to make her friends happy.

“Caitlin,  you may not make it to the spot but you’ll be ok.” remarked Kathy. Caitlin was just about to help her friends to be happy but with that remark, no way. “Oh and Amanda you may not get to be the  assistant coach, you are kind of rusty with your moves.”said Kathy. “ What?  You’re the rusty one,” said Amanda. “ You and Caitlin,” Caitlin knew she should hold it in but she couldn’t hold it in any longer. “ You think I’m rusty! You think I’m rusty! I am really so much better than you two!” Caitlin couldn’t believe what she just said, but in a way she was just a little bit proud. She doesn’t go saying that  every day especially to her friends. But any way Caitlin thought when did any of that come to mind in Kathy and Amanda? Any way deep down she knew Kathy and Amanda didn’t like it this way.  They just fought because they got angry they didn’t fight because they wanted to.

Caitlin got in the car to go to tryouts. “Mom,” whispered Caitlin. “I got in a fight with Kathy and Amanda and now I feel,” Caitlin stopped, “Like we are not friends anymore!” At first, Caitlin’s mom was silent, then she said, “Honey you three will always be friends.” After that Caitlin was there. “Give it your all.” “I will.”
Then, standing right there, were Kathy and Amanda. Caitlin really wanted to say something, but the words just wouldn’t fall out.  So she just took her seat right next to Amanda. Then the coach said. “Caitlin I’m ready.” She got up and jogged over . “ Yes coach,” sounding hopeful. “I want you to do ten slap shots, ten sweeps, and dribble all around the field, and lastly do eleven passes with me.” That’s exactly what she did. After that her mom showed up. “ Honey do you feel you did your best?” “ Yes I do!” “Good I have dinner all made. It’s your favorite chicken!” After that the rest of the drive home sounded quieter than a mouse.

After Caitlin got to school, she could not stop thinking about whether she got the spot or not. When she was in the last class of the day she didn't even listen. All she did was stare at the clock the whole class. So did everyone else who wanted the spot. It was just before the clock struck 12, Caitlin sat still for a moment and thought of her friends. She was upset that they got in a fight, but she knew it would probably all end soon.

Once the clock struck 12 o’clock, Caitlin raced to the door and ran into the hall to look at the board . And then Caitlin heard a “Yippy!” that made Caitlin worry. Did someone else get the spot?  She sprinted even faster  and then she got into view of Kathy and Amanda. They were running with no time to waste. She pushed through the line to see that the  name that was on the board was not her’s, and it was not Kathy’s and it was not Amanda’s. The name was Kily’s. She ran to her friends to tell them the bad news. “ Hey guys, well, Kily got the spot.” Amanda and Kathy stood there shocked. “Also guys, I am really sorry about what I said. It was all not true. I was just mad and upset and well, sorry.” Caitlin felt good that she said that. “I’m sorry too!” replied Kathy. “Me too!” said Amanda. “Friends?” “Yep!” “Sure are!” “Lets go tell Kily the good news, ok!”  “I’m in!”  “Me too!”
