Excerpt from Rules and Strategies for Football

Plays and Routes:
Plays and routes are the most important things you need on offense. They direct where the wide receivers are running. Plays direct the whole team where to go. Even the offensive lineman have a direction where to go. Some go left and some go right, or they just stay in there same position the whole time during that play and just block the quarterback. Routes are mostly just for the receivers because all it does is mostly help the wide receivers where to go. Routes are not as special as a play, and because of that is that the route is in a play, and because of that is because the whole play controls everything on the field. Now here are some routes, the post, the slant, and the fly. The post is you run up about 15-20 yards and then go diagonally to the center of the field. The slant is you run up 0-5 yards and slant the whole time to the center. And finally the last route, the fly is very simple all you do is run straight down the field for about 30 yards and see if the quarterback will pass to you. The quarterback throws it high into the air so its in front of you, and the defender will not block it or intercept it. On slants the quarterback will throw a bullet pass to you because if the quarterback throws a lob pass, it will give the cornerback enough time to run up to the ball and block or intercept the ball.
