In the late 1850’s there were thousands of children living on the streets as homeless orphans. They were living on the streets of NYC and they were dying. They were living in trash cans and cardboard boxes. All of their parents gave up on them sometimes because they hated children. This was a problem that no one was fixing. The homeless children felt ashamed that other children who were wealthier called them street rats, foundlings, waifs, half orphans, street urchins. They were living a horrible life. Someone needed to fix this.
One day a man named Charles Loring Brace created the orphan train. He saved children from selling matches, rags, or newspapers to survive. The orphan train brought homeless kids from the east coast to the west and thousands of children’s lives were saved. These children were thankful for Charles loring Brace. He was proud of what he did.
