Dear Diary,
Today, my teacher gave us an assignment during class to reflect whether or not I’d like to live in colonial times. Although colonial times has its charms and beauties, I would definitely prefer to live in modern times. There are so many reasons why I think this is the better era of time, including things like how it is more friendly at school today, there is much more time for fun and technology, and there is an immense difference in the medical field.
There are many reasons to choose why the 21st century is a better era of time to live in, but my number one reason is the change in the field of medicine. Doctors in colonial times, even the most skilled, didn’t know that germs make people sick! The average doctor in the 21st century would say to stay home from school and rest up, instead of draining someone’s blood with a leech or by cutting your vain open. If the doctor drains too much blood, you could possibly die! That leech can also carry germs too! Speaking about spreading germs, doctor’s in colonial times never bothered to wash their hands before and after they treated a patient! How repulsive! Also, having surgery back then was like getting tortured with pain until the doctor finished! Although they did give you rum to help with the pain, you still felt most of it. In the 21st century, now you have to go through anesthesia, then go along with the procedure, and finally, you get to sleep a little after the surgery to rest because the anesthesia does not just make you go to sleep during the surgery, but after it too. So when you finally wake up, you feel like nothing ever happened to you! So as you can see, the 21st century was a much better place to be in a medical type of situation.
My second reason I am satisfied of the time that I live in, is that there is so much more free time these days for fun. I think it is ridiculous that you could have only a few toys like a leather ball stuffed with feathers, or a wooden hoop that you roll, or even a doll made out of cornhusks and rags! The colonial children barely got any time to use them too! Kids today have more time than colonial kids to play and have fun, but we still have to do at least some work around the house. We also are exposed to technology and a huge variety of electronics. These creations not only entertain kids, but teach and inspire them too. Things like iPads, iPhones, Androids, Xboxes, Playstations and much more are only the beginning of technology. Technology will get way more advanced in the future. The colonial kids are really missing out on an experience of a lifetime. Only if the colonial kids could’ve explored the wonders of technology in the 21st century.
Another reason I like modern times better than colonial times is that it is less harsh today then back in colonial times. You couldn’t go sledding or swimming. It was the law back then! It is like they were trying to take away fun in the winter and summer. I for one could never survive without sledding and especially swimming. How else can you relax and cool off in the summer? These activities commonly used for fun in our era of time were considered sins in colonial times. Also, they made you go to church no matter the cost because, again, it is against the law! School was also very strict back then. Obviously being social and working in a group is a commonly used standard that most schools use today. They try to build teamwork for future references. Well, back then, if you even got caught whispering to your friend, you’d get whispering sticks in your mouth! If you didn’t know your lessons, you would be called a dunce. Besides that, you had to wear the dunce cap while sitting on the dunce stool. If you bit your nails you would have to wear a card around your neck that said “Bitefinger Baby." These were very cruel punishments, but are never going to be seen today. Kids today are very fortunate!
From the points I have made, you can see why I love our present day. It is more enjoyable, safe, and very friendly. From school, all the way to having fun and technology, the choice is very transparent. The 21st century is an amazing era of time and is a more enjoyable era of time than the colonial times too.
Yours Truly,
Peter M.
