Candy Bar Essay

Did you know that eating sugary foods kick off a chemical reaction in the brain that makes us want more sweets? There are many people who are debating among if the Mars and Hershey candy companies should either discontinue their candies, make changes to them, or keep them as they are. Many experts say they should make changes. A few reasons to support this are because of the hard work on cocoa farms, there is lots of added sugar. But as they are doing this, we should not interact with all of candies benefits.

One reason that candy companies should make changes, is because of the hard work on cocoa farms. The harsh child labor can prevent them from a bright future. Mike Hughlett and Jim Spencer, writers for McClatchy-Tribune, say, “Kids go through hard work getting cocoa, and can sometimes get violently sick.” This causes not only the kids lives, but even the lives of workers at cocoa farms. Less children means less money, and less money means less jobs. So then that, overall, means that chocolate will not be made anymore unless they change something about child abuse on cocoa farms. To meet the demand of cocoa, farmers seek cheap child labor. This should be ended immediately. It is a horrible idea to make children suffer just so they can get cheap cocoa. In addition, can you believe some of the kids are kidnapped?

Another reason, is there is a ton of added sugar in candy. Sometimes, if you eat too much candy, you can die because it can clog up your heart. They definitely need to change that. And it’s even worse that many of the foods we eat have empty calories in them. Empty calories are a kind of hidden sugars and fat. In addition, when you eat processed carbs, your blood sugar spikes up tremendously. Evan Halper, Tribune Washington Bureau writer, says,“Extra sugar is added to many of the foods we eat and the government would like people to know how much. Candy companies and soft-drink makers don’t like the plan.”

A final reason is candy can have many benefits. Doctor McGonigal says, “Dark chocolate may help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.” So if milk chocolate is very unhealthy, we can just change all chocolate to dark. Also, did you know that cotton candy can grow new blood vessels? For example, and this might sound crazy, but researchers at Cornell University are using cotton candy to create artificial blood vessels. In addition, a shot of sugar can help restore your willpower.

Critics like Evan Halper, from the Tribune Washington Bureau, may say that there is too much added sugar in candy and food labels don’t show how much. Others like Doctor Kelly McGonigal might say that is completely wrong, and that the positives of sugar entirely overcome the negatives. Everybody loves a piece of nice, sweet candy once in a while, but there are many changes that could take place to make candy more enjoyable. Some of those changes could include eliminating all of the child labor on cocoa farms. Another change should be to lower the sugar content in candies. While they are doing this though, they should not interact with all the candies benefits.
