Frienemies
Chapter 1
Brriinngg, went the first period bell. Every kid in the classroom rushed to their seats. Like always, Liv and Rachel got in trouble for talking and were taking their own sweet time to get to their desks. “Come on girls get to your seats,” their drama teacher Mrs. McMuller said sharply. They rushed to their chairs as quickly as possible and sat down. Liv and Rachel have been best friends ever since first grade and now they’re in 6th.
“Good morning class,” Mrs. McMuller announced. “Good morning Mrs. McMuller,” answered the class unenthusiastically. “I have a very exciting announcement; our class is going to put on the play “Rapunzel” on March 11th. So, the play is exactly 2 months away,” she explained.
Yes's and yay's went all around the classroom. Now the class was excited. I hope I get the part Rapunzel Liv thought. But so did every other girl in the class. When class ended the room was buzzing with excitement.
Chapter 2
“What part do you want?” Rachel asked Liv while she shut her locker. Rachel sounded thrilled and was waiting impatiently for Liv to answer and ask her the same question. “I want the part-” Rachel couldn’t wait any longer she cut Liv off and said “I want the part Rapunzel and I’m going to get it.” She sounded very confident in herself. “That’s what I was going to say,” Liv shot back. “I’m going to get the part Rapunzel and you’re not!” “Oh yes I am!” Rachel did not sound happy anymore. “I am a better actress than you!” Those words came out of Liv’s mouth in about 5 seconds flat and without any thought at all.
Could Liv believe what she was saying? She and Rachel had been best friends ever since 1st grade and now they were having a huge argument. But, Liv was too mad to be nice right now.
“Well I’m only going to be friends with people that actually believe in me,” Rachel exclaimed with great fury. “Fine, I’m only going to be friends with people that believe in me too!” Liv said angrier than ever. “Fine!” “Fine!” With that both girls stormed off in opposite directions to their next class.
Chapter 3
After a week of practicing for the audition, it had finally come. Mrs. McMuller was the director of the play and it was her job to determine who would get the parts. Liv had practiced every single moment of every single day after school and she assumed Rachel did too. She knew all of her lines by heart and felt confident that she’d do great. When Liv walked into the auditorium on Thursday after school, she was surprised to see Becky looking down at a script and reading over her lines. Liv could barely make out the words: Part: Rapunzel.
Liv was shocked, she couldn’t believe that shy Becky Pulsin was auditioning in front of everyone and was especially surprised that she was auditioning for Rapunzel. Becky was a good actress and all, but Liv thought that maybe she was a little too shy to audition and that maybe she would work on the set instead. Being the nice person Liv is (most of the time) she went over to Becky and said some encouraging words since she looked a little nervous.
“Hi Becky!” Liv said with a cheerful kick in her voice. “Hi Liv,” Becky answered looking down at her script. “Well…..I just wanted to say good luck and that I know you’ll do great!” Liv exclaimed to Becky. “Thanks,” Becky answered. “Good luck to you too.” Still no eye contact. “Um….I guess I’ll see you later,” Liv said. “Ok... bye” Becky answered quietly.
Liv then walked away, sat in her chair (the furthest one away from Rachel) and watched each kid audition until finally Mrs. McMuller called her name. Neither Becky nor Rachel had auditioned yet. So Liv was determined to show Rachel how much better of an actress she was. Her audition was going great until the very high note in the last song. She was sure she had perfected it, it was one of the things Liv worked on the most. But, right at that last note, the highest part in the song, her voice cracked!
It was so loud probably the people in the whole other room could hear it. Liv was so embarrassed, but no one laughed or even spoke, everyone was silent. The only thing Liv could hear was the good job Mrs. McMuller said to everyone, but Liv’s good job was faint, very faint.
Rachel messed up too, she forgot four of her lines and when she did she stood there on stage with a worried look on her face. Each time Rachel messed up on her line Mrs. McMuller would just say for her to go on to the next. Each time, Rachel would. Maybe messing up on four lines would be worse than messing up on up on one teensey little part of a song, Liv thought.
When Becky’s turn came Liv was shocked, amazed, and speechless. She hit every note in every song she sang perfectly, every line, perfect. Liv couldn’t believe her eyes. Maybe I have a little chance, Liv thought. She didn’t want to admit that she probably didn’t, especially not to Rachel.
Chapter 4
On Friday morning Mrs. McMuller announced that she had chosen everyone’s parts and was going to put the cast list in the 6th grade hallway on Monday morning. So, when Monday morning came everyone was anxious to see the list. When Liv’s mom dropped her off in her bright red Honda, Liv quickly said, “Bye mom,” and sprinted out of the car with a loud slam from the car door.
When she got inside she saw a huge clump of kids surrounding the cast list. She saw a bunch of sad faces leaving the list and a couple happy faces. Liv just hoped she had a happy face on when she left the list. When finally, there was enough room for Liv to squeeze in, she saw the list and this is what she saw:

Liv was shocked. Horse #1!! she screamed in her head. How could they place me as horse #1! Liv was sooo mad, but she wanted to congratulate Becky on getting Rapunzel. It took a little while for Liv to actually look happy on the outside, even though on the inside she was furious. At least Rachel didn’t get Rapunzel, Liv thought trying to cheer herself up. After Liv said congrats to Becky, they rushed to first period drama class together since they didn’t know it started in 2 minutes!
When Liv and Becky arrived at the classroom Mrs. McMuller announced that there is play practice after school and to make dismissal changes if needed.
At play practice Mrs. McMuller gave each person their scripts or if they worked on the set she gave them their list of assignments. Play practice wasn’t all that interesting because all Liv and the rest of the kids did was go over lines and a lot of people asked what their facial expression should be or if they should react happy, sad, afraid (etc). The whole play practice, Liv was trying to avoid Rachel, not talk to her, or even look at her, but when they finally ran through a scene the horses had to talk to the villagers. Then Liv was forced to look at Rachel and that ruined the only fun thing they did.
Chapter 5
After lots and lots of play practice Liv was finally ready and prepared for the big night. Thursday was dress rehearsal and Liv was so excited. At first, Liv wasn’t happy about what part she had, but now she was. Mrs. McMuller had told them that the horses got really cool face make up and now Liv was okay with the amount of lines she had .(But she still would have preferred the part Rapunzel) Liv still wasn’t talking to Rachel but truthfully, she felt a little lonely.
When dress rehearsal had come Liv had practiced 24-7. She was sure she knew all her lines and songs, after what happened at the audition she was sure she wouldn’t make that mistake again.
Liv got into her costume quickly, rushed back to the auditorium, and went backstage where all the kids were waiting. Finally, when Mrs. McMuller called for the narrators to come on everyone got excited and started talking. Once Mrs. McMuller heard the talking she quickly shushed everyone up and dress rehearsal began, and Liv had no idea what was coming.
When Liv heard the cue for the horses to come on she quickly ran over to Catherine (who wasn’t paying any attention) and told her that they were going on. They ran on stage and finally got into their positions. Liv was doing the scene where the villagers and the horses talked about the Prince and if he was going to save Rapunzel. That meant Liv had to talk to Rachel which she didn’t want to do, but she had no choice. Liv said her line and Rachel was supposed to answer her, but she didn’t. Liv could tell she forgot her line. Mrs. McMuller had told the class if someone forgot their line and they were in your group to say the line for them if it made sense. But nobody in her group did, they all just stood there.
Mrs. McMuller finally said Rachel’s line and they kept on going. Everything went well until they were exiting the stage, Liv tripped over Rachel’s foot and fell onto Catherine who fell onto the set and bumped into Zack who fell too causing the whole set to come crashing down. “Everything is ruined!” Mrs.McMuller yelled. She was devastated.

‘ Liv and Rachel both stormed out into the hallway and started arguing. “This whole thing wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t forget your line!” Liv demanded. “How did I start this you were the one that tripped!” Rachel declared furiously. “I wouldn’t have tripped if YOU didn’t step out in front of me!” “STOP!” “I can’t take it anymore!” Becky screamed.
That was the first time Liv had ever heard Becky scream before and Liv could see that Becky was a little shocked herself. “You guys used to be best friends and now your enemies over one little argument your…..your...frienemies, yes, frienemies.”
This made Liv and Rachel think. Did Becky really care about if they were friends or not to tell them how she felt? At the same exact time Liv and Rachel both said they were sorry and hugged.. Becky was proud of what she had said and also very happy, Liv and Rachel were friends again!
Chapter 6
Show night had come and Liv was so excited. She was so happy Becky had helped her and Rachel become best friends again.
Almost the whole first period drama class had helped rebuild the set and when Liv arrived at the auditorium the set was up and looked better than before.
The cast ran through the play once and then got into costume. Then parents, grandparents, and other family members came into the auditorium to see the play. When Liv saw all the people come in she started to feel nervous and apparently Rachel could tell because she walked over to Liv and told her she was going to do great. After that Liv felt a little better and a little more confident.
When the play ended the whole cast went onstage and bowed. The play had gone great, nobody forgot their lines and everybody did their best, and the audience could tell.
When Liv greeted her mom, dad, and little sister after the play, they gave her flowers and said that she did fantastic. Liv was happy they thought that, but Liv was even happier that she was friends with Rachel again. Liv and Rachel were frienemies but for now they are just best friends.
