Secretariat--The Super Horse

Secretariat was one of the most famous racehorses of all times.

And of course if you are wondering, he is unbeatable! His records still stand today. Can you believe it? He was one of the fastest horses in the world at that time.  He also reached speeds up to 55 miles per hour.  NOW THAT’S FAST!!!!

So,  get your helmet and riding crop for the ride of a lifetime!

His owner was Penny Tweedy (Chenry). She loved horses all her life. Her father Christopher Chenry became ill as soon as his wife died. Penny noticed that the farm that her father owned was losing money.  She knew that she had to do something, because her father was ill.  He could do nothing.  Penny was soon notified that two of the horses at their farm were pregnant.

The next day she found out that one of the mares was her father’s favorite.  She instantly told him. The mares were Hasty Matelda and Somethingroyal.  The foals were both  fathered by Bold Ruler. He was the hottest stallion at that time.  As Penny was thinking about which mare to use the colt from, she got a call from Bold Ruler’s  owner.  His name was Wheatly Stable. He was having the same problem with one of his mares.

 

Wheatley wanted to have a coin flip because they were trying to decide whose foal is whose.  Penny agreed.  The flip was held at his mansion.  In the beginning, Wheatly said: “ Your father never won any of our tosses.” Penny was quite offended.  “You will not win any after this!!” She said with dignity.  His butler flipped the coin………... it was heads!  Penny won.  She got to keep the foal. She chose Somthingroyal because she was her father’s favorite horse. She had no idea that the colt was going to be as famous as Madonna! (Maybe even a little more!)

On March 30, 1970, Somethingroyal gave birth to Secretariat at 12:26 A.M.  He was smaller than the veterinarian fully anticipated.  He also had lost some blood.  But as soon as he started to feed from his mother, he instantly got stronger.  The next day he was running around the foal-safe-paddock like a mad-man.  

Penny was so happy with the way that he was turning out that she forgot one key thing to a successful racehorse: a trainer. She started to search immediately. Her father recommended a man named Lucin Lauren. Lucin Lauren was an extremely good golfer and was a retired racehorse breeder. He was not very fond of it .  He loved to watch the race horses on the hot-walkers and bred a lot of fine horses in his day and most of them were very successful.  But, the last one was not. The last one was supposed to be the fastest one EVER. But, this racehorse died of lack of strength when he was born.  So, in the theory of life everything has a time to go to the afterlife and this was that horse’s time to leave this world for the next.

Secretariat as a foal with his mother

Since the day that Secretariat was born, he has had thousands of visitors. Most of them were not expecting a scrawny, headstrong little foal to turn into a Triple Crown champion!

Let me tell you that he got into so much trouble. One of the best stories is from when he was being shown on a tour of the farm he lived on,when he accidently  broke away from one of the grooms and ran out into the road. A truck driver saw him and got a hold of him. Don’t worry.. he was okay!

Now that you have learned a lot about Secretariat and his life, you will be fantasized about his legacy.  You will love watching YOUTUBE videos about him, as I do.  Some people say that GOD whispered into his ear “GO.” And he went. Others say that he was a gifted horse. In all things, Secretariat was a beautiful horse.
