DISCONTINUE THE CANDY!


Can you believe Americans spend over $150 billion each year on candy? Some people say it is fine and the candy should be sold, but after extensive research, this expert disagrees. In fact, they need to stop selling these candies. Candies are unhealthy because they have lots of sugar, Hershey's chocolate is guilty of irresponsible manufacturing, and too much money is spent on candy. People spend $150 billion each year on candy!


One reason Hershey and Mars candies should be discontinued is because they are unhealthy. For example, the candies have a lot of sugar. It’s hard to believe, but it is true that candies have a lot of sugar. Did you know that one serving of M and M’s has 30 grams of sugar? That is an awful lot of sugar in only a little bit of chocolate! In addition, if you eat too much candy, you will get tooth decay. It’s hard to believe that a few bags of candy can cause you to lose your teeth! A last example of how candy is unhealthy is that sugar releases fructose which can only go in the liver where it behaves like fat. So, if you do not want to get fat, do not eat lots of sugar. A scientist named Nicole Avena says, “The more you eat, the more you want,” so that means you will have more sugar and then you will not feel good. The evidence is clear: sugar is not good for you!


Another reason Hershey and Mars candies should be discontinued is because of irresponsible manufacturing practices. For example, 1.8 million kids work on cocoa farms in Africa. Could you even imagine that that many children work on cocoa farms? Also, some children have been kidnapped to work on cocoa farms in Africa. You are eating candies that children are being kidnapped to make! That should make you think twice before you take a bite of your candy! In addition, some kids are separated from their family to work on a cocoa farm. Isn’t it shocking that kids are taken away from their families? The situation is serious and it is a major reason why these candy companies need to make some big changes.


A last reason that Hershey and Mars candies should be discontinued has to do with money. Did you know that in 2008, people around the world bought $150 billion worth of candy? That’s a lot of money to spend on candy. Also, in only one year in America, people spend billions of dollars on candy. Why spend so much money on candy? The worst part of it is that even poor people spend what little money they have on candy. If you are poor, why waste money on something that is unhealthy? If there was no candy to buy, people would save an incredible amount of money!


Critics say chocolate is healthy for you, but chocolate can cause tooth decay. Why have a little chocolate bar that might taste good but can cause tooth decay? A fifth grade expert says if he eats too much chocolate, his stomach will hurt. It is easy to decide to not sell Hershey's or Mars candies. These candies have got to go!
