The Britannic

A lot of people know about the Titanic but few know about the Britannic.  The Britannic was made in Belfast, which was the same place where  the Titanic was made.  After the beginning of World War I the ship was changed to a hospital ship.  When the ship was completed in 1916, it was on its way to the war the ship had 1,066 people on board.  The Britannic is now 99 years old. Some people called the Britannic “The Gigantic” because it was so large.

The Britannic was a H.M.H.S. ship, that means, His Majesty's Hospital Ship. The colors were yellow, red, green, and white. Yellow was the funnels, white the main color of the ship.  It then had a  green the stripe across and and there was a red hospital sign on it too. The Britannic was 883 feet long, making it larger then the Titanic.

The Britannic was the biggest ship ever lost in World War I.  How the Britannic sank is a mystery that nobody knows. People think the Britannic was sunk by a bomb because there is a large opening in the ship. The ship's sinking location is 37’42’05.0͒North and 24’17’02.0͒ East.

Chapter 2

The Britannic was always a mystery on how it sank.  In 1914, the people in England was losing the war so the navy changed the Britannic into a hospital ship. On October 22, 1916; the Britannic went to go bring wounded soldiers onto the ship and bring them back to other places all around the world. The captain of the ship was Charlie Bartlett.

Chapter 3

On November 21, 1916, the Britannic was on it’s way back to pick up more wounded soldiers.  Captain Bartlett turned the ship around towards the island Kea.  

The Captain Charles Bartlett thought that the ship would save people's lives, but it didn't. The ship's speed was 23 knots,or 29 horsepower,or 42 M.P.H.. They would get all the new soldiers into the lifeboats and then go to Spain.  After that  the wounded soldiers were supposed to be brought back to Ireland.

Sadly the ship sunk, but thankfully most of the people on board were saved. The way the ship sunk is still a mystery for years to come but someday we will find out.

GLASS FALL

“It’s bed time everybody!” my mom said with glee from downstairs.  Knowing that it was 9 o'clock and I was only 5;  I agreed to go to bed.  But first I had one last thing to do, and that was to play with my dad.  I went over to my dad and asked him, “Can I play with you?”  To my surprise he  actually said yes.   I ran over to my unbelievably small bunk bed and waited.  My intense brother pounced onto the bed, launching me off.  I slammed into a tall glass lamp. Seconds later pieces of glass fell from the lamp on my head.  If it weren't for pure luck I would have been dead. Everybody was so scared.  Everything froze for a second and tension started to build.  Then everything zoomed back again.  My mom carefully brought me to the bathroom sink to wash my head.

After that my mom urged my dad to take me to the hospital screaming “Take him to the hospital! How do we know he will be ok ?”  But for some odd reason it wasn't really hurting me at all.  Once my dad and I were at a local hospital we sat down at the waiting area.  Finally we got in and they stapled my head and washed it, though it didn't really hurt much. By the time I was home everything was a lot better.

That is how I learned to be very careful even doing something a bit dangerous.  By the way my brother was in big trouble for being so violent! That is never going to happen again.

Getting Morgan

One day  I was playing Skylanders on the Wii with my older sister’s friend Nick in the living room at my house. We knew  that my sister Abby and Rob were getting a German Shepherd Black lab mix puppy named Morgan. We were waiting for so long because they were getting him in New York. We could not wait to see him. But a few minutes later we saw a truck pulling in and it was Rob's truck. We ran out there with my sister’s other friend. We saw the puppy, so soft and calm.   Morgan was one of the cutest things I have seen in my whole life. He was so scared. Morgan finally ran up to the door and put his paw on it. We let him inside and put all the Skylanders away because he could chew them up. He was so hungry so we gave him some goldfish because they did not get him any food on the way home. Morgan only stayed in the kitchen because he was so scared. However, after a few minutes later he went into some other rooms. We were so happy to see him.  When Liz and Nick left, we went to the pet shop.

When we got there we bought lots of stuff.  We got him a little blue collar, water and food bowl, a mat, and we got him some food. After that we went home. Rob went to his sister’s house and got Morgan a crate.  We put a pillow and a dog bed in it. We filled his bowls with food and water for his dinner. I laid down with him in the living room on the floor since dogs in our house are not allowed on the couch. All of a sudden, he got hyper and bit my face.  Morgan then ran away into the dining room. He finally calmed down so we put him to bed. I kissed his soft, fuzzy, tiny head and his dry little nose. Good night Morgan.

The Water Cycle Times

Shocking new story!

Maisie the water droplet travels in through the water cycle!

It all started one day (October 1st to be exact) when I was taking a nap. Something felt different, it almost felt like I was getting lighter. It was like I was water vapor! But then I thought about it and it couldn’t be happening. It only happens once and a while. Maybe it was that time, just maybe. So finally I decided to get up and check it out. And when I did I couldn’t believe I was going around the water cycle again. For a second I blanked out on what happened. But then it all seemed clear to me. The sun heated up the water so I evaporated into a gas called water vapor. But suddenly it started getting colder. But not to worry, I knew what was happening, I was condensing into a water droplet again! This happens when it gets cold in the air so the water vapor changes into water droplets again. As I floated up into the sky I saw all my friends floating up with me. When we reached as far as we would go we crammed together and made a cloud! But as the best was soon to come!

Now we we are falling to earth in the form of rain. This was the final phase of the water cycle, precipitation. It happens when the cloud gets too heavy and can’t hold anymore water so its lets the water fall to the earth in a form of snow,sleet,rain,or hail. In this case I was rain, it depends where you are and how cold it is. Anyway, I hit the ground and soaked into the soil. The water cycle was over. I knew it would be hundreds of years until I went up into the water cycle again.

Whale Watching

Beep! Beep! My alarm clock went off as I jumped out of bed. The sunlight filled the room as I jumped out of bed. I couldn’t hide the smile on my face. I was tired but excited. I was on a vacation in Cape Cod.  Me and my family were going whale watching. I brushed my teeth and got ready. Then, we went to the parking lot. The sun was a faint glow and the plants were covered in morning dew.  We got in the car and drove to the dock. On the way to the dock, me and my sister, Christina were talking. “Aren’t you excited?” I asked. She gave a weak smile.”Of course!” she said.

When we got there, I got on the ship and and took a front seat. The ship was a pearly white with glass windows. The sun was peeking out of the clouds. I couldn’t  see a bit of blue in the sky. The water shined as little fish made ripples in the water. The boat was deserted. The only people on the ship were me, my family, another family , an old lady, and a girl my age.I was so hungry! I didn’t eat my breakfast. I could eat a squid!  Luckily, I forgot that we stopped by Dunkin Donuts to get some breakfast. I looked inside my backpack to find a delicious egg and bacon sandwich. Then , I began munching on my sandwich and before you could say “ set sailing away”, it was down my throat and in my stomach.

”Dad, how long will I have to wait until the ship starts moving?” I asked.  He glanced at his watch and said “2 hours.”  ”2 hours!? I can’t wait for that long!” I thought. “If we don’t see any whales, I’m going back to sleep!” I thought to myself.  

When I looked behind, all the seats were full.  ”Excuse me, can we sit here?” the old lady asked.  ”Sure,” my dad replied.  “Sure!? That’s what you said!? I’m already squished  here!” I thought.   It was true. I was  stuffed in between my dad and my sister.  ”Move over,” he said. I gave him a look that said, I am not enjoying this and scooted to the very edge of the bench. I thought that it would be better if I stood up than being flattened by my dad and my sister. So I got up and watched the minnows swim under the boat.

Suddenly, the ship started to move. It went faster and faster and in a few moments we were steering into the Atlantic Ocean.”Welcome! It is wonderful to see you today! Here are some rules about boarding and and being on the ship,” I looked behind to see a lady with a megaphone.  As she went over the rules, I looked out.  Now the sun was coming out.   The sea was shining, but I didn’t know what was coming.  Shortly afterward The ship went incredibly fast.  I felt like I was in the shooting of the movie “Titanic”. I spread my arms out. I felt like I was flying! I regretted that I chosen to wear shorts and a t-shirt because I had already started to get goosebumps on my legs.  My cheeks had turned as red as a tomato. I was freezing!   I felt the icy wind on my face. I wished that the ship would slow down.  Just like a fairy granting my wish, we slowed down.  ”That’s the whale over there” the lady said. I peered into the distance and saw a massive whale.  As the lady started yabbering about whale facts,all the people cheered

It was a navy blue whale with barnacles on top of it’s head. It’s eyes were glinting with curiosity as it looked at the cheering crowd. Then it leaned back and fell into the water. The crowd cheered even louder and ended with a series of flashing lights. You couldn’t even hear the lady speaking in the megaphone! It seemed as if no one was listening to her. Suddenly, It came back up again but this time, It came with a tiny smile. Then it hit it’s flipper against the water and made a big splash. It looked as if it was waving at me. This whale was like a dog! We saw many whales. They popped up to the surface 158 times! It was so fun!

But before I knew it, we were at the dock. Me and my family got off the ship and walked to the parking lot.I hoped that we would go whale watching again soon. As I got in the car, I looked at my sister who was smiling. Then we drove away and that is a story for another time.

Pittsburgh

400 years ago, there was no such thing as Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh was found by the American Indians because of its beautiful waters, which include 720 rivers.  The natives would settle on the tip of the golden triangle; a level peninsula that is formed by the Allegheny and Monongahela River coming together with the Ohio River. However, it didn’t stay like that for long.  When the British came on November 25, 1758 with General John Forbes they took the land for battle ground.  But, to this day, you can still see where the American Indians settled.  Forbes decided to name this land Pittsburgh after William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. Pittsburgh is one of the only cities to have an “h” at the end of burg suffix.  Although through 1890-1911 the “h” was removed because President Benjamin Harrison declared the U.S. Board of Geographic names to restore order to naming of cities and other places in the U.S. like lakes and rivers.

Chapter 1

History and Facts

Pittsburgh is now known for being a big manufacturer of steel  and a world leader in organ transplants.  Pittsburgh is also known for being a big sports city.  Home to the six-time Super Bowl Champions, the Steelers, and famous Pirates baseball team and hockey team, the Penguins.  Pittsburgh is known as “the Steel City” and “the City of Bridges”.  This elaborate city includes thirty skyscrapers, two inclined railways, and 446 bridges.  The city is about fifty-five squares miles in area and now has a population of about 305,841.  It is the second largest city in Pennsylvania and number twenty in the country.  

Remember hearing about the american settlers and the golden triangle?  The golden triangle is now a main business section in Pittsburgh.  An interesting fact is that the French and Indian War started in what would become the center of Pittsburgh.  

Chapter 2

Climate

Pittsburgh is a very cold city. It gets an average of 29.3 inches of snow a year.  Pittsburgh gets an average of 36.1 inches of rain a year.  However the average U.S. city gets 25 inches a year.  The city also gets approximately 46 more precipitation days than the average.

In an average city, those 46 precipitation days would be sunny and not rainy or snowy.  If you like snow and cool weather, Pittsburgh is the best city for you.  

Chapter 3

Sports   

In sports,  Pittsburgh mostly started to do well in the Sixties.  The Pirates won the 1960 world series against the New York Yankees on October 5-13 and is remembered as one of the most memorable World Series of all time.  These two teams together had 8 league MVPs (Most Valuable Players). The Pirates with three, Dick Groat in 1960 and also Bill Mazeroski and Roberto Clemente on 1960.  The Yankees had five, Yogi Berra, 1951, 54 and 55.  Bobby Shantz, 1952 Mickey Mantle 1956 57’ 62’.  Roger Maris 1960 and 61’ and lastly,  Elston Howard in 1963.  Can you imagine that?  That is a lot of MVP’s!  The Series was amazing, ending on the first World Series walkoff home run.  A walkoff home run is a homer that ends the game.  The home run is remembered as “The Shot”.  Bill Mazeroski hit the home run, but the surprising thing is, he wasn’t a very good hitter!  Bill was one of the only people to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame who that good of a hitter.  His outstanding fielding kept him a threat.  The Pirates haven’t won a World Series since then.

The Steelers, Pittsburgh’s football team, has remained strong ever since the 1970’s.  On January 27, 1969 Chuck Noll was hired the fourteenth Head Coach of the Steelers.  Right away he made a good impression by picking Charles “Mean Joe” Greene.  Mean Joe would be a Steeler Hall of Famer and the second player to have his number retired (number 75) from the Steelers.  The first was Ernie Stautner, number 70.  Greene was not the only person that Chuck found that made the Hall of Fame.  He also found Terry Bradshaw as a quarterback and placed Mike Webster at center. Lynn Swann and John Stallworth were both wide receivers plus Franco Harris and Robert “Rocky” Bleier as running backs.   

For defense, Noll also got Jack Ham & Jack Lambert as linebackers, plus Mel Blount.  That team won four Super Bowls and was one of the best teams of all time.  

Even after the Chuck Noll era, the Steelers were still a pretty dominant team.  They won two more Super Bowls after that with Ben Roethlisberger.  

If you like hockey, you can try the Penguins.  The Pittsburgh Penguins have won three titles, or Stanley Cups in 92’ and 07’.  There Captain, Sidney Crosby was the second youngest player to win a cup.  They also have stars like Evgeni Malkin,  Chris Kunitz, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Kris Letang.  

Conclusion

Over all, Pittsburgh is a very good city for sports fans, Historians, and cold weather lovers.  Pittsburgh isn’t just urban either, the city is surrounded with small towns, still parts of Pittsburgh.  The amazing city that over 300,000 people call home has something for everyone.

Why Bears Live in Dens and Caves

Bears in the spring used to sleep behind rooks.  Then in the winter, the snow and leaves covered the bears up over their bodies.  But one day a herd of mountain lions moved into their territory.  Early in the morning  some of the adult mountain lions went out for fish.  When they came back, they fed the fish to their cubs.  So the bears had no food. Then when the bears were weak other mountain lions  attacked the bears for food.  While the other mountain lions kept watch of the cubs. Then in the winter, they would dig and sniff for any sign of the bears. If they sensed something they would dig them up and attack them. The cold would weaken the bears and their weight would slow them down so it was an easy kill for the mountain lions.   The cubs (which were grown up by now) started to make the kill. Then one day a bear found a den. The winter was coming fast and the mountain lions were coming out, so the bear went in the den. The snow covered the den and the bear and her family.  They survived the entire winter.

When the next winter came all the bears went in caves and survived the winter.   Meanwhile the mountain lions couldn’t find food so they traveled up onto a mountain.  On that mountain the population of the mountain goat was expanding rapidly throughout the mountain side. So when the mountain lions got there they brought the population down to the average.    That is why bears live in dens and caves.

The Water Cycle

I’m a water droplet.  I've been going around the water cycle for years.  Want to go thru it with me?  First you start off in a body of water, like a lake, ocean, or any other body of water.  just like right now I’m in a lake.  When the sun is hot and is burning down on me I evaporate. Woohoo!  Now I’m evaporating.  So now that I evaporated that means I’m water vapor.  I’m in the air.  Now a bunch of water droplets like me all come together and form a cloud.  This is called condensation.  Next is precipitation.  When too many of us water droplets get together the cloud gets too heavy.  When it gets too heavy it causes us to form into rain, hail, sleet, or snow.  So right now I’m raining.  This is called precipitation.  Next is run off.  Run off is when precipitation happens the water would run off on a mountain or something and end up in a body of water.  That's the end of the water cycle.  Just so you know this may take months or years, I just went thru it quickly for you.  This goes on for millions of years.

Labradoodles

  

  My dog  is a large brown labradoodle, her name  is Coco. Labradoodles are a mixed breed of labs and poodles. They are very neat, like poodles, and very playful, like labs. They were first bred in Australia. I love taking her out for walks and going out to play with her. It is so much fun because she runs so fast and is full of energy.

Food

You don't have to, but it is recommended to feed labradoodles 1 (in human years) and under, one meal a day. When they are older, you can feed them 2 meals, once in the morning once in the afternoon. You can feed them leftovers sometimes, but you should put the leftovers in its dish or bowl. If you feed it straight from the table, it is likely that your dog will beg. Always make sure that your labradoodles’ water bowl is full. (carrots are not recommended, they might throw up)  The weight of your labradoodle should be 50-65 lbs.

                                                                                                    

                                                     

                                                                                                                           

           

Exercise and play

You should walk your labradoodle twice a day, once around 8:00am-9:00am. then around 6:00pm-10:00pm. But you can really do it  whenever you want. To keep your labradoodle happy, play with it once a day a let it run free in an  area that it can not run out of. It will have a lot of fun and love it if you do that. This looks a lot like my labradoodle.

                                                                                

                   

Grooming and Haircuts

You need to properly  groom your dog to keep it clean and well kept. You should brush  him or her every 1 or 2 weeks to keep the knots and matted parts out, and give it a bath once a month so their hair is shiny and clean. An  advantage of having a labradoodle than some other dogs is that they have hair so they don't shed and you won't have to clean your house all the time.  My dad needs sheep shears to cut my dogs hair because it is very thick. Some labradoodles don't have such thick hair.

Labradoodles are fun and very playful animals. You should always pay attention to them and they will love you. Play with them once in a while and make sure they are happy.  In my opinion they would be a great dog to have for a family.

The Lock Down

“Bang!” I ran downstairs to see what was there matter, however everything looked fine. I decided to make a breakfast for Julia.

‘’Mom ’aren't you gonna eat’’? Julia asked. ’’ I’ll grab a cracker’’ I replied. I opened the car door and dropped off Julia to school. ‘’Good bye honey! Have a good day at school !’’ I ran off to my bakery. When I got there I twisted the key slot to open my bakery door. Started mixing some batter and making a wedding cake for my friend wedding.

When I was making the layers for the cake the whole bakery shook! ‘’Ah’’ I screamed my batter fell on the floor. Was that an earthquake or was it a tornado? Or was it a ghost? Everything else in my bakery was broken. I had a feeling that more bad things were gonna happen so I tried to run out the door. However, it was way too late the door closed on me by itself! I twisted the doorknob, but I was locked in. All the food was splattered on the ground!. My phone was dead so I couldn't use it.

“Ding,ding,ding” went my alarm clock. ‘’What happened?’’ I asked myself. I remembered everything, ‘But why am I at my house?” I thought to myself. I bolted into Julia’s room, ‘’Honey what happened yesterday?’’ ‘’Mom you slept the whole day yesterday.’’ she calmly replied. ‘’Wait all that happened yesterday was a dream!’’ I surprisingly screamed out. ‘’What!’’ screamed Julia. ‘’ Nothing a long story’’ I replied

Introduction

In a far off distance you see lights. You move towards the lights and see people carrying food. You follow the sidewalk until you can’t walk any farther. You look up at the baby blue sky. Then you turn around and go into a shop. In the shop there is a huge crowd waiting for their turn to ask where is this or where is that. Then you go to the end of the line and wait your turn to ask for pizza as a snack right before lunch time. This is how lunch time is in Italy.

What do you want to eat?

       For a lot of Italians breakfast is only bread or pastries that is usually served with coffee. Lunch is usually a midday snack, and  lots and lots of people crowd around lots of stores that sell pasta, pizza and calzones. Calzones are like a combination combining meat, cheese and veggies inside a crust. Dinner is always the largest meal of the day. Italians eat dinner late in the evening. A lot of dinners includes soup, salad and one or two main courses and, of course, dessert. A lot of adults enjoy espresso after their dinner. Also Italians eat lasagna and spaghetti and pizza. Spaghetti can be made with a lot of veggies and also meatballs.

     In Italy, there is a very healthy oil they eat it on bread. On a very hot day Italians like to eat gelato. Gelato is like a Italian ice cream. Gelato has as many types of flavors from chocolate to sour cherry. Pizza is baked in an oven that is heated with wood. Pizza is eaten as a snack. Italians are famous for their pizza and rice. For dinner Italians eat pasta or rice first before salads and other foods. Dinner often ends with eating fresh fruit. In Italy, there is a lot of tasty treats to try.

                                                                                   

When is the next holiday?

     A lot of Italians are Roman Catholic.The Christmas season is December 24 to January 6. On the last day, January 6, a witch called La Befana brings gifts. Some girls wear the La Befana costumes during the parade for the holidays. Another holiday is Ferragosto or the feast of Assumption. That holiday is celebrated on  August  15th. Some other days celebrate Italian history. On April 25th, the country celebrates the end of World War 2. Republic Day is on June 2; it marks the day in 1946 when Italians voted to establish a republic. Some  cities have big parades. Italian people have a lot of holidays they celebrate, for special reasons.

Music and Attractions

   When Italians sings songs they tell stories. Operas use Scenery, acting and plays. Italians wrote some of the best operas. La Scala in Milan is one  the most famous opera houses.

   Venice is one of the most famous cities in Italy. Venice is built on 117 small islands. There are no cars in Venice people travel in boats called gondolas and canals and motor boats. Not that wide walkways are lined up with houses and shops. Plus in Piazza that is in San Marco is the heart of Venice. Millions and billions of people go to see Venice every year. The people that go to Venice learn about Italian art, history and culture. Did you know that Venice has an acqua alta or high waters? Plus to stay dry people have to walk on temporary wooden sidewalks? Also that once in a while the sea floods the whole city floods? There are problems in Venice but there is other stuff to check out there too.

San Marco: San Marco is where Piazza is in Venice.

Venice: Venice is a city in Italy. There are no cars in Venice because there is no roads for cars people either travel by boat or by walking.

The Corn Pit

Me and my friend Jillian ran up the hill. “Aw!” we exclaimed.The hay maze was closed.  I was so upset I felt like crying, but I knew why it was closed.  It was going to rain because the sky was the color of smoke.We went to check out the animals.  It smelled terrible.  There were peacocks, but their feathers did not spread out.  Then Jillian remembered there was a corn pit. I also hoped it was open because the rain seemed to pass and it was.

I went to take off my shoes and to climb in. We made beds out of corn and corn angels.  I got corn stuck in my ear and my nose.  Then we got out and got our shoes back on. We went to Jillian's house for a playdate.  It was an awesome day!

A Old Friend

My awesome dog that I miss lots, Edelweiss.

I had a puppy who wasn't scruffy and a heart full of joy.  

Her coat is gray so I said hooray , then we run and play.

When I see her eyes as blue as the sea, I tell myself how lucky I must be.

When she ran around I looked to see, a happy face looking right me.

Her paws are big, her legs are long, together we will howl a song.

When she ran around she would fly off the ground, I said to her, slow down !

Then I giggled and ran next to her.

When I went to bed she ran up stairs and jumped on right next to me.

When I closed my eyes I saw us playing together and happy to see.

As joyful as can be, she left me sad and lonely .

Sad or happy, I still have those lovely memories.

Death Wave

One day I was in North Carolina and went boogie boarding.  I was with all my friends.  It was a cloudy day, the tan sand was smooth. This was the only beach I've ever been to with tide pools!  It was also the cleanest, it was amazing.
As I went in the water I thought about how warm it was.  I might as well been taking a bath it was that warm.  I had never  went  boogie boarding before so I didn’t know how good I was or how to do it at all! The boogie board was a cherry red color.  I was a little nervous. So my dad taught me how.  He taught me by bringing me to a wave and throwing me off like the Hulk!  I turned out to be pretty good!  So I wanted to go out more so we did.  But I tried a new scale of wave and then… CRASH! The wave hit me and it fell on me like a million hammers pounding on a bent nail.  I swam as hard as I could to get a breath of air. I was pretty much helpless. I was hoping I was going to make it.  After I got to shore,  I was blind for  a while, but it wore  off.  I wondered if I was in heaven or  something; but I opened my eyes and it looked exactly the same as before.  ”That's enough boogie boarding for me” I said.
