Skiing                                    

Close your eyes and imagine snow flying in your face, warm clothing, and a nice, cozy place to stay. Skiing is the best outdoor sport.

During the winter season, there are many activities to do such as skiing. There are lots of fun things to do while skiing and tricks is one of them. Tricks are very cool. You have to pop up on your skis right when the balls of your feet are about one and a half inches away from the end of the jump. There is normally blue spray paint at the end of each jump. This is to get you higher in the air, and to let you know when to pop up on your skis. Then, you do your trick and land on the diagonal part of the landing. Also, you can ski moguls. Moguls are little, hard hills of snow that are diagonal from each other, and they are in an order that keeps repeating. To ski this, you need to move your skis left to right super fast. Pole plants help you ski moguls. To do this, you need to touch the pole in the center of a mogul and ski around it while your pole is still there. Skiing is also about speed. Speed is critical in skiing. It allows you to control how long it will take you to get to where you're going. Speed also gives you a nice feeling called freedom.

When it comes to skiing, equipment is very important. One very important piece of equipment is a helmet and goggles. A helmet protects you from falling. If you fall on your head, a helmet will prevent you from getting a concussion. This is why it is a very important piece of equipment. Now let’s talk about goggles. Goggles stop the sun from getting in your eyes. Goggles attach to your helmet so they don’t fall off. They are like sunglasses, but five times better. They also stop snow from getting in your eyes because snow would just stay on the lense. Then, you could just wipe it off. Another piece of important equipment is a thick, winter jacket. This jacket will keep you nice and warm. You need a thick jacket because temperatures can reach up to -10 degrees. That is why a jacket is very useful. To ski, you’ll need a special type of boot called a ski boot. This boot attaches to your ski. So of course it can’t be a regular boot. The ski boot has four buckles. One buckle is where your toes and foot meet, one buckle is before the ankle, one buckle is where the foot and ankle meet, and the last buckle is in the middle of the ankle. These buckles will keep you secure so you don’t jostle around.

If you want to ski, of course you will need a nice place to stay. A ski house would be a great place to stay after a hard day of skiing. A ski house is a great little house made for only one thing…...relaxing. If there is a river in back of the house, you could have lots of fun walking on it while it’s frozen. You just have to be very cautious so you don’t fall in. Also, you could go on nice walks on a dirt road with your dog. This is an extremely good way to exercise.

These are some reasons why skiing is the best winter sport that anyone could think of. Many people are very fond of skiing.

OWLS    

Owls are one of the most fascinating birds because of what they eat and what different appearances they have.

Would you believe that there are more than 10 types of owls? Well, there is the Barn Owl, the Screech Owl, the Burrowing Owl, the Great Horned Owl, the Tawny Owl, and many more. Many owls make nests, such as the Screech Owl. On the other hand, the Burrowing Owl makes burrows. All owls need a place to rest such as twigs, a nest, or a burrow so they can get nice and cozy to sleep and rest. It can also be for their young.

It’s amazing to think about all the different appearances that owls have. Let’s get started with the colors. There is light brown, dark brown, orangish brown, white, black, black with white, and many others. Now onto wings. Whenever they land their wings are wide open and they kind of crouch over. As soon as they settle in they put their wings back. They have designs of all sorts on their wings. The Eastern Screech Owl’s wings are red on the top view and on the underside they are white with a little black. Now onto eyes and heads. All owls have a beak. They all also have big round eyes that can’t move, so they need to turn their heads to see. The furthest they can turn their heads around is 270 degrees. They can also turn it upside down.

The foods owls eat are fascinating. Owls are birds of prey, so that means that they have to kill their prey. Some owls eat specific food. Scopes and Screech Owls both mostly eat insects. Barn Owls mostly eat mice, shrews, and voles. Eagle Owls eat young foxes and birds the size of ducks and other game birds. Some owls are good at fishing such as the Asian Fishing Owl and the African Fishing Owl. Most owls will eat any live prey that they can fit in their mouth and that won't kill them before swallowing it. Hearing and sight helps them find their prey. They fly silently because birds have stiff wings but owls have serrated feathers.

Amazingly, you now know how to go owling. You know what they eat, what they look like, and what different owls there are. Next time you see an owl you will surely notice their beautiful eyes, their interesting features, and look out for their nests and burrows!

The Best Time of the Year!

Picture this: people putting up lights and blow up decorations. Seeing people rolling out dough and putting frosting and sprinkles on cookies, and people tearing apart the wrapping paper full of joy and laughter. People enjoy all of these traditions and more during the best time of the year, Christmas!

You’ll soon discover that everything will be decorated for Christmas! Everyone will be putting up lights, ornaments, stockings, stickers, and much more. Everyone loves putting the ornaments on the tree and putting our stocking on the mantle. Especially putting up lights outside. Decorating is great to do with family. Decorating is as fun as going sledding with your best friends. It is the most wonderful time of the year! When everything is decorated and lit up it is so glorious to look at. Decorating is a great way to show Christmas spirit! You’ll love to decorate  for Christmas!

It is hard to believe that it is almost time to start baking for Christmas. First, you’ll have to shop for all the ingredients. Make sure you don’t forget anything for the cookies. Next, after you have all the ingredients you have to follow the recipes. There will be a lot of steps to follow. Remember, don’t miss a step or else they won’t come out tasty. Then, you can make all different types of cookies. There are so many to choose from like anisette, biscotti, sugar cookies, and much more. All of them are fun to make. After that, you have to frost and sprinkle all the cookies to make them a little sweeter. Finally, sit back and enjoy the cookies. Once you take that first bite it is like heaven. You’ll be glad that you spent all your hard work on baking, after you taste how delicious they are. Enjoy baking!

There is no doubt that opening presents is one of the best things about Christmas. There are so many good qualities about presents. For example, Santa and family put the presents under the tree. So many presents can fit under a Christmas tree! Also, it is so much fun to go out and buy presents for friends and family. It is so generous to give someone a present. But, the best part about presents is when you receive them from others. Can you imagine the look on your face when you see what you got. Everything that you're gonna get, you’re gonna love it. Don't you just love presents!       

            Christmas is the best holiday because you get to spend time with family and have lots of laughter. You’ll always love spending Christmas admiring decorations, eating your favorite home baked goods, and opening the present you dreamed of getting. There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you get the best present ever, but the worst feeling is when Christmas is all over. Amazingly, Christmas is almost here!

Help the Panda Bears!

      

Panda bears are currently in danger.  They may go extinct because of starvation. Regular bamboo is easy to find.  The hardest bamboo to find is arrow bamboo. Pandas eat arrow bamboo.  Arrow bamboo is dying off.  This hard to find plant only grows every sixty years. It will grow again in ten more years.

A solution that pandas have figured out is to eat other food.  Panda bears now occasionally eat leaves, plants, and other greens.  So, now they don’t die of starvation anymore because they are finding different things to eat. They also eat berries, fungi, flowers, fruit, grass, bark, bird’s eggs, and insects.  So that is a solution to help stop the extinction of panda bears.

Another problem is that pandas are being killed and their habitat is being destroyed. Panda bears are killed for their valuable skin and sometimes their own meat. Bamboo is being cut down because people use it to make decor in houses and to make houses. Some people are making charitable foundations to not kill pandas. Also, people are against making houses and decor out of bamboo. Help save the Pandas!

Candy Should Be Changed

Mars and Hershey candy companies need to make some major changes to their candies. These candy companies, who manufacture such popular candies as  York Peppermint Patties, M&Ms, Twizzlers, Mounds, and Reese’s peanut butter cups need to make changes in the areas of sugar, food dyes, and nutrition labels.  In a single bag of candy there can be over 20 g of sugar! Your opinion about these candies might change after reading this.

I don’t know about you, but I love candy! Besides the grand taste, some Americans consume over 3 pounds of sugar a week. That sounds really gross, but it’s true. That shows that people eat too much candy these days. Who wants to eat that much sugar? If you are one of those Americans, you better brush your teeth! Some of these sweet treats may cause you to get cavities. For your information, cavities hurt a lot! Be careful how much candy you eat! You better watch out because sugar can consequently cause you to get obese or diabetic. No one wants to be obese! Too many Americans in America are obese because of unhealthy eating habits. “But constantly indulging in soda and processed sweets set you on a path to potential health dangers,” says Sarah Flynn Wassner in the article The Scary Truth About Sugar.  Last but definitely not least is that these sugars are bad for developing the human brain. As you can imagine, most people want the best and healthiest brain and body they can have! A way you can eat more candy is by choosing varieties with less sugar. This way those candies will not be as bad for your body. Remember this the next time you are choosing a sugary sweet!

My mom is a really nice person--when it is time to go to sleep,

When it’s time to brush my hair to go to sleep,

Dear Diary,

I should introduce myself. I am Homer Sampson. I live in the Colony Connecticut and I am 12. I will be writing diary entries to tell about my life. I have black hair and brown eyes. I dislike loyalists. I like to play with pop guns.

The people in my family are my father, his name is Jared and he is a blacksmith, and my mother, her name is Emeline and she is a milliner. My only sibling is my brother Isaac. He is 13 years old. And I can’t forget my pet cat, Alex. We came to America from England for freedom from the king.   

My family is not very wealthy, but we still have enough money to carry on in life. I have only one friend and his name is Seth. We like to play ball together and use pop guns. We also like to climb trees. We were on the same boat coming from England and we became the best of friends. Our parents became friends with Seth's parents and we became neighbors.

My house is made of wood. It has a wooden roof and a brick chimney. There is a large fireplace attached to the chimney. My family and I all sleep in the same room. My mother cooks on the fireplace. We are really healthy and have lots of food from the harvest.

I don’t think I can write much more because I think Isaac is still up, and I don’t want to be caught. I will have to get up early to do my chores tomorrow. I hope the cattle are alright. I must go to sleep now and await for a new day to begin.
