Dear Diary,
Why hello! My name is Primrose Cornelia Moore. This diary is just delightful! Before I start writing about my enchanted life, I think it is the best choice to let you know about me. I received this journal at about 8:20 this morning. Oh, have I forgotten to tell you? Today is my birthday! While I was opening presents this morning, Mother handed me this notebook.
As I was saying, I am very delighted to write to you. I am now 11 years old, living in the colony of Pennsylvania. I am the youngest out of four children. I have a brother who is 14 and his name is Jeremiah Elijah Moore. My other brother is 21 and his name is Bartholomew Archibald Moore, I look up to Bartholomew, he is battling in the war. My 19 year old sister’s name is Rosanna Tabitha Moore, I admire her. Rosanna has never been very close or personal with me, but I wish to be like her some day. Rosanna is the loveliest and most likeable girl I have ever seen. Rosanna has flowy chestnut hair with a round shaped head. Her lips are rosy red and perfectly formed. She has round, green eyes that are just dazzling! Every day Rosanna is home alone doing chores around the house since girls cannot go to college after Dame School ( 1, If You Lived In Colonial Times ). When I get home I see her wonderful smile and it makes me realize how much I look up to her. Mother and Father are also fabulous. Mother’s name is Henrietta Emeline Moore, and she is a milliner. Mother sells important goods and takes pride in being able to have one of the only jobs that a woman can run by themselves. ( 2, The Milliner). Mother is beautiful; I watch her get dressed every day. Mother looks amazing having her outfit all put together. She has her shift, stay and stockings beneath everything. She wears blue petticoats and a matching gown with sleeve ruffles to make her appearance even more elegant . And to make the look even more charming she wears a white hat, blue shoes, and muffs to keep her warm. Father’s name is Thaddeus Emanuel Moore. Father is the governor; he makes decisions in place of the king and can disapprove of any law (3, The Real Story About Government and Politics in Colonial America ) which I find quite marvelous. And finally me, as I have told you twice, my name is Primrose Cornelia Moore. I work the land all by myself. Sometimes Father helps me, but ever since Jeremiah left for college at University of Pennsylvania and Bartholomew left for war, I work the job alone. I don’t quite enjoy girly things though I can enjoy an occasional dress up. My regular outfit is a dress with a stay which is another word for corset ( 4, 18th century clothing ). I have blue eyes and brown curly hair. My height is above average and I am utterly muscular. I am nice, giving, and caring. My curiosity fits in with how outgoing and adventurous I am.
My ancestors came from England for religious freedom for the reason that we are Catholics, and promising our loyalty to the pope is illegal in England (5, http://en.wikipedia.org/). We like it much better here.
I am getting tired and I haven’t much more time to write before my candle melts. It is raining outside, and the rain during the summer months is quite helpful for Father and I with our crops! ( 6, History Alive ) I am very excited to check in on the crops tomorrow!
I wish to use this very frequently. I will let you know about my adventures here in Pennsylvania.
Pray remember me,
Primrose Cornelia Moore
