Can you believe that researchers at an affiliate of Georgetown University Medical Center found that a compound in cocoa beans slows the growth of cancer and speeds their destruction? This is only one of the good things candy can do for you. Though some would say this is not true, and that candy and sugar has no effect on you, after intense research, this expert would say otherwise. Actually, this researcher thinks that some people should start having a little bit of candy due to its benefits. Did you know, for example, peppermint can keep a driver alert? That could be the difference between life and death. This concludes how candy helps some people. The research is clear: between health and mind effect, people should keep candy and maybe even start eating it every once in a while.

One reason why Hershey and Mars candy companies should keep manufacturing the candies as is, is because of health. For example, can you believe that people who eat candy live a year longer than people who don’t? Think about that, a whole year more to live. You could spend it with loved ones, on work, etc. Also, people who eat a chocolate bar weekly, reduce their chances of dying. Nobody likes dying, so eat chocolate and it will reduce your chances. In addition, chocolate helps prevent diseases that attack the heart. Heart diseases are brutal: you have to take medications, go to the doctor, and sometimes get surgery. To prevent that with one candy is amazing. Eating dark chocolate decreases the percentage of getting a heart attack or stroke by 39%. 39% is a lot and for that number to be used for preventing heart attacks or strokes is legendary. Another health benefit is that a Hershey chocolate bar contains 8% calcium and has 3 grams of protein. So next time your mom says that a Hershey’s bar is bad for you, just tell her it’s actually not and give her the facts! Steve Atkin, Professor of Diabetes and Endocrinology, said, “Chocolate with a high cocoa content should be included in the diet of individuals with type 2 diabetes as part of a balanced approach to a diet and lifestyle. This study demonstrates that it can offer a potential reduction in cardiovascular risk without detrimental risks on weight, insulin resistance or glycemic control.” As you can obviously see, experts agree that chocolate is even good for some people with diseases.

Another reason why Hershey and Mars should continue manufacturing the candies as is, is because it helps your mind. For example, peppermint helps you focus. This means so much. People who have trouble focusing can eat some peppermint and it will help them. Also, chocolate can help improve your mood with a chemical called phenylethylamine. Next time you get angry, don't storm off, just grab some chocolate and start eating. In addition, chocolate contains a chemical called serotonin, which acts as an antidepressant. So if you got a bad grade on a test or if something depressing happens in your life, chocolate can fix it. Chocolate also helps with memory loss. To take it to another level, if you have short term memory loss, just eat chocolate; it will help.

A final reason why these candy companies should continue manufacturing the candy as is, is because people have a relationship with candy. Michael Allured, publisher of the magazine Manufacturing Confectioner says, “People have a special relationship with candy, especially those who grew up with it.” This concludes that some experts agree candy is good. In addition, Michael says that candy is comforting. This means people like candy and they like it to be around, but to take it away would be torture. Also, he says that it's relatively inexpensive for some people. Now, as you have learned, candy is affordable and comfortable. If this doesn't say something to you, this fifth grade researcher doesn't know what will! Fifth grade researchers took a poll of fifth graders from Samuel Staples Elementary School and asked them this question, “If a candy is discontinued, would you buy a different one and eat it or not?” Out of 16 students, 16 said yes. The polling experts also asked, “If a candy is changed would you buy it and keep eating it or buy a different one and eat it?” Out of 14 people polled, four people said they would still eat the same product, and 10 said they would eat another one. So, if you want to change or discontinue a product, people might just get a different one and eat it.

Others might say that candy is bad for you, but this fifth grade expert would argue that it's not. Let’s take, for example, the fact that if you eat candy you live about a year longer than people who don't. Think about that. Critics argue that if candy is changed or discontinued, it will help people. While this might be true, the poll proves that these fifth graders will just buy different candies. Some people think, big deal a couple fifth graders were polled what effect will that have on us --why not adults or someone important? However, these fifth graders are our future adults and they might grow up to be important. Some people may think that candy doesn't help you, but this fifth grader snatched some peppermint under his mother's eye, and ate it before a test. The outcome was that this fifth grader finished the test first with higher markings than usual. Notice this doesn't happen when eating a piece of fruit. The evidence is clear: keeping candy will actually help people.
